  • M/Sgt Francis R (Bob) Mader: RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge, 1958-61, 81st Periodic Maint Sq. Submitted by Helen Mader. I would like to post my name on this website to find any of my dad's old buddies. He was at Turner AFB in Albany, GA before that. He died suddenly in a hotel in Woodbridge in October 1961 while tying up loose ends in preparation for transfer to Florida. My mother was an English citizen before marrying. Her name is Dorothy, but may have been known as Doff or Dotty. Both she and my dad were 31 in 1961. When my dad died I was 7 and my sisters were 5 and 2. Helen, Valerie and Vivian. Vivian was born in 1959 and I assume that was in the base hospital. Before living on Old Barrack Road in Woodbridge, we lived in Wickham Market. My dad drove a VW bus that he adored and he liked antique cars. When he wasn't working on airplane engines he was playing with car engines. I will be grateful to find any of his old buddies and hear their memories of my dad and the good old times. I include a photos of my dad. 3/18/01

  • Terry L Malzi: RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge Jan 1980-82 and Nov 1983-Nov 1987. 702x0, Fire Station and then orderly room of the CES. My wife is from Ipswich and also worked at Debenhams till we got married May 1982. I believe the Col's name was Thompson. They named the road after him. I came to RAF Bentwaters shortly after the crash but had a friend who showed me the box's the parts ended up in. 4/14/01 Regarding the Thompson Crash. As I understand it, the crash took place at RAF Chicksands in Bedfordshire. Interestingly, there is no runway at RAF Chicksands. The aircraft cart wheeled in during a demo flight, and the pilot was reportedly killed in a sideways ejection. Mrs Thompson sued the aircraft and seat manufacturer (FRC/McDonell-Douglas), and (reportedly) received a multi-million dollar settlement. The aircraft had a 'beta' Stability Augmentation System (SAS), and it was believed that an inflight SAS failure caused an uncommanded roll(?). A monument erected to Col Thompson at RAF Chicksands was moved to Base Ops at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, in about 1995. It was interesting to see it at DMAFB after seeing it at RAF Chicksands in 987. It was at the DM rededication ceremony that I saw Mrs Thompson and her son who was then flying for the USAF. I also remember seeing the boxes containing the remains of Col Thompson's aircraft in the old Victor Alert area at RAF Bentwaters shortly after my arrival there in 1980. An additional story associated with Col Thompson regards an incident which occurred within a month of his crash. I spoke with crew chiefs at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge who claimed to have removed branches from the good colonel's aircraft nose wheelwell. He was supposedly restricted from flying for some unspecified period of time, and only returned to flying status shortly before his fatal crash. Having seen the videos of "normal" missions flown by A-10 squadron pilots, I have no reason to question the above report. Alan S Wisniewski, 2LT Retired. 4/11/01.

  • Larry Maughan: Sandy, Utah. RAF Bentwaters, Aug 1965-Sep 1966, 81st FMS. Great memories were made at RAF Bentwaters. I joined the 81 FMS after 8 months at Toul Rosierre, France. PCS'd to France from Luke AFB, AZ. The Chief of Maintenance in France said he didn't want to retrain anyone with less than 18 months retainability. They were going from RB-66's to RF-4C's. So, orders were cut sending me to RAF Bentwaters. What a blessing that was. The squadron from France headed for Nam shortly after getting their birds and the base was closed when France booted Uncle Sam's military out. I was trained on the F-101 and then the F-4C. Enjoyed TDY's to Wheelus and Spain. I've since retired from the Utah ANG where I was assigned to the 130 EIS. Also retired from US WEST as a Central Office Engineer and am now employed as Director of Network Communications at the Salt Lake Community College. Life has been great and many of my fondest memories are of the USAF, especially time spent at RAF Bentwaters. England was great and so is the AF!2/13/03

  • Eddie C McAfee: 1323 Frederick Dr, East Ridge, (Chattanooga) TN 37412. RAF Woodbridge 1962-65, 81st Air Police Squadron. Worked on "D" Flight Security under TSgt Shively for most of the time as an A3C-A1C. Returned to RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge 1973-76 as a TSgt/MSgt and worked on most all of the flights on both bases. Went TDY to Turkey in 1964 with Ed Vogler. Great guy, good airman. Sharp as a tack. I remember many of things talked about by the folks signing your page. Especially the crash of the F-101 at RAF Bentwaters, Col Olds and Lt Col James (both later Generals as we all know). Met both. Drank whisky with Robin Olds in the 78th VA one Christmas in the early 60s. Was chewed out by Chappie James at the RAF Woodbridge Main gate in about 1963 for not saluting him. He was just leaving the Officer's Club and he was tanked. Next day he looked me up and apologized. Retired from the USAF in 1981, from Minot AFB, ND. 5/11/00 East End Charlie? East End Charlie was a legend among the young Air Police Ramp Rats in the early 1960s. Many thought he or she was a haze induced ghost or, at best, the figment of the imagination of some lonely young Woodbridge 81st Air Police Squadron guards which had nothing to do all night on sentry duty but to stare into the dense fog and wonder who (or what) might be out there watching them. The greater the imagination, embellishment and story telling prowess, the larger the legend. But, for me and several more who worked security duty in the 78th TFS Aircraft Alert Area (Victor Alert Area) during the summer of 1963, we discovered that East End Charlie was not only real, but also real fast. For several months in 63 there were several trailers parked just south of the 78th Tactical Fighter Squadron Alert Aircraft Area at Woodbridge (just a few hundred yards west of the East Gate which led through the forrest to RAF Bentwaters). These trailers were parked about 50 yards from the Alert Area and about the same distance from the base perimeter fence. On several occasions we would see movement around the trailers late at night and also see cigarettes being flicked out the windows of the trailers. We would call for mobile patrols and K-9 teams to respond to check out these sightings. But each time the intruder (later dubbed East End Charlie) would beat the responders to the perimeter fence, scale the fence with catlike lightning speed and evade apprehension. Each time we would hear a motorcycle leaving the area a short time later. We figured we had either a spy or a very brave and determined Ban the Bomber on our hands. After several failed attempts to catch Charlie, we enlisted the help of the local police who set up nightly stake outs in the woods outside our base fence. Then one night as the usual scenario played out, East End Charlie scaled the fence and as he departed the area, he ran smack dab into the outstretched arms of two waiting local English Constables. To the best of my memory, East End Charlie turned out to be a young local boy who was a member of an English Aircraft Tail Spotter Club. He wore spiked toed shoes, motorcycle gloves and pants. That is how he was able to get over the fence so fast and not get hurt. He would park his motorcycle in the woods, away from the base in the late evening, and would walk the rest of the way and climb the fence after it got dark. Legend has it that he came back once each summer for several years, and did the same thing, until they moved the trailers. That was probably his way of having fun and to just say hi. I cannot attest to that as I never personally saw him again after the night he got caught. 03/3/10

  • Robert Morris: Evergreen, Alabama. RAF Bentwaters, 1965-1968, 91st TFS. Crew Chief on F4C 65-1163, was night line chief, made many TDY trips to Tripoli,Libya (too many) for 30 days at time. Had to leave my family back in Grundisburgh, near the base. Kids in diapers, what a time she had trying to shop, and to the base hospital occasionally. But we loved that assignmet more than any while in the USAF. Would love to hear from old friends from back then. I worked Victor Alert also. All crew Chiefs know how that was to be isolated for days or weeks. It was also good memories, and was an asset to our country and the Brits, security. Would love to go back and see some of the locals we knew. Went to the Running Buck a few times before my wife arrived from the states. What a pub that was. See Ya and thanks. 16/12/06
  • Gene Monson: Cottage Grove MN. RAF Woodbridge, 1951-53. 81st Fighter Sq, Air Police. Lt Rust was Provost Marshal. Base was Shepards Grove then. Our town for pub hopping was Bury St Edmunds. Sure beat going to Korea. 8/10/02

  • Keith Moore: Spalding, lincolnshire, UK. RAF Bentwaters, 1965-71, 81 CRS, Officers Mess. During my time at RAF Bentwaters I became very good friends with an airman Stephen T Twigg, even got invited to his wedding in the states, (never made it though). We had great times together in the clubs in Ipswich. Have worked for Xerox for past 20 years and soon to retire. It would be great to be able to track Stephen down again after all these years. Hope you can help. 3/27/03
  • Garry Montague: West Chester, OH (near Cincinnati). RAF Bentwaters Aug 1976-Aug 1978, 81st FMS. Propulsion Branch Chief supporting the J79 engines for the F-4D's. Planned the transition to A-10's/TF34's just before rotating to CONUS. RAF Bentwaters was one of my best assignments during my USAF career. Enjoyed merry ole England even though it got a little damp at times. Lived at Martlesham-Heath. 2/2/02
  • Gary Montecalvo : Martlesham Heath, 1975-76, 2164th. What a great site. We had some great times, parties, flag football team, Running Buck and rec room. Names that come to mind, Mark Muchow, Frank Hickey, Hank Staron, John Barrett, Russ Rearick, Mark Tarplee, Ken Wipf, Bernie Vancel, Al Gardine, Brad Ahrens, Kevin Milligan, Tom Day, Dennis Midhoffer, Capt Wadorsnik, Capt Hashimoto, Terry Gilliland and many more but have forgotten their names. RAF Bentwaters had a great gym, better food and great football games. The F4's were very impressive with their powerful afterburners and noise. It is sad to see weeds growing on the deserted base. The whole experience was great. I learned after joining MCI, 2/3rds of the people working in civ comm field were ex-military. Thinking back, what a great deal, travel, great friends, free education, we had it made.12/09/98
  • Maurice Monteiro: Las Vegas, NV. RAF Bentwaters, Jul 1985-Jul 1987, 511th AMU of the 81st AGS, ECS maintenance tech on the A-10. Working on the flight-line brings back many memories. Some good, some bad. I met a lot of good people there but lost track of them all. I went to serve at Dyess AFB for the rest of my enlistment. I live in Vegas now and just received my Master's degree in Education. Some names I remember but forgot so many. I remember the beautiful countryside and biking on many ocassions throughout East Anglia. I also used to take long walks throughout the roads behind the base. I marveled at the scenery and easily understood what prompted writers and poets to create the works they had accomplished. Especially during the winter, there was something magical about the landscape. The cottages with smoke unfurling from chimneys, crystal icicles hanging from tree limbs, and the surprise of seeing deer occasionally dart across a path. In spite of the many experiences I had there, I still feel that I didn't seize as many oppurtunities as I should have. I find myself missing England very much at times. The memories come back more vividly as I write this. I plan on going back and visiting the areas I had spent two years of my life in. Nostalgia or a sense of closure, I'm not sure which one, maybe a sense of both. If anyone I had been stationed with would like to contact me, please do. I am especially looking for William Kwan who was a Nav Specialist on the flightline with me. Thanks for the wonderful website which has triggered many "long-ago" experiences and memories. 1/9/02

I came to faith in Jesus Christ through the evangelistic efforts of Faith Baptist Church which was located near our base.
